Chris Wilder admitted Sheffield United got what they deserved as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Fleetwood.
A second half Rhys Norrington Davies own goal earned the Fylde Coast side a last 16 home glamour tie with Premier League champions Arsenal.
“It was self-inflicted in the manner we started the second half,” said Blades boss Wilder. “It killed us.
“I said at half time, we have to be careful of this game; we have to take the game away from them, go and win the game instead of allowing the game to come to us.
“We had gears to go into but we went off plan and started to do things individually not what we should have done as a team. They were better at being a team than we were.”
Norrington-Davies headed a Danny Andrew cross beyond Michael Cooper to secure unbeaten Fleetwood a first ever last 16 appearance; the Highbury outfit against the former Highbury aristocrats.
Andrew had a goal disallowed for offside and Town twice hit the post as they dominated. United came into their own in the final 10 minutes but keeper Jay Lynch made several outstanding saves while Tom Cannon had a goal ruled out for offside.
“I am massively proud of the performance and the result against an unbelievable team and an unbelievable manager,” said Town head coach Matt Lawlor.
“We rode our luck at times but generally we were comfortable, we defended unbelievably well because of the quality they possess.”
