JOHN DISNEY stopped short of making any bold predictions - but he knows Connah’s Quay Nomads are in a great position in the race for the Welsh Premier League title.

With 10 games of the season remaining, Nomads are in a three-way race for the crown with reigning champions The New Saints and current leaders Barry Town United.

Nomads slipped from top spot to third courtesy of a surprise 3-2 defeat at 10-man Carmarthen last weekend, but there is still all to play for with only two points separating the top three.

Andy Morrison’s men don’t get too high if they win, or too low if they lose, with plenty of twists and turns to come in the weeks ahead.

“No-one really talks about it,” said Disney with reference to winning the title.

“Can we do it? We deserve to be where we are, that’s for sure.

“At the start of the season you look at TNS and you try to be as close to them as possible, so to be only a point behind them, and two off top means we have left ourselves in a good position.

“Our results against the rest of the top six prove that we can beat the teams we will be facing.

“But, we will be taking each game one at a time.”

The temptation is for Nomads to look ahead to the final two games of the season, where they entertain Barry Town before finishing the campaign at The New Saints.

“It should be an exciting end to the season,” continued Disney. “It’s good for the whole league that there are three teams at the top within two points of each other.

“Everyone will be looking at those final two games of the season, but the other eight are just as important for us.

“The last two could be the deciding factor in the title race, which will certainly make things interesting.”

There is nobody better, certainly in the Nomads camp, to talk about what could be an historic season than Disney, who has played every second of every game.

Disney remains one of Nomads’ part-time players, but such is his influence, he’s one of the first names on Morrison’s teamsheet.

“When I made the move in the summer from Bala it was to play regular football,” said the 26-year-old, who has played through the pain of a fractured toe this term.

“It’s great to have played every game this season in a team that is doing well week in, week out.

“I’ve played in a few positions: centre-half, right-back, left-back and in midfield. I’m really enjoying my football, I’ve had niggles, but I hate missing out on games.”

Nomads take a break from action this weekend, but training will be as intense as ever as Morrison looks to iron out some concerns about the goals his side are conceding.

“As a defender I want to keep clean sheets,” said Disney.

“We will be working on things in training because the top six will be tight and we can’t afford to concede too many goals.”

But Disney doesn’t think there is too much wrong at the back for Nomads, who still have the second best defensive record in the league.

He added: “People have been clinical against us. They are getting chances and taking them.

“We watched the Carmarthen video back and they had three shots and scored three goals.

“We’ve conceded some good goals as well and they all stack up.”
