WREXHAM were knocked out of the Scottish Challenge Cup after losing 2-0 against Rangers Colts in the quarter-finals at Ibrox Stadium.

The Reds beat Ayr United and St Mirren under 21s to reach this stage of the competition but a goal in each half secured Rangers' place in the last four.

Manager Dean Keates named a completely different line-up from the team that began Sunday's FA Cup first round draw with Rochdale.

Players who have not started recent games and youth teamers came into the side, with a young substitutes bench also selected for Wrexham's third game in the competition.

Rangers enjoyed a lot of possession in the early exchanges and Ciaran Dickson's shot was saved by Christian Dibble.

Nathan Patterson's effort was deflected for a corner from which he fired wide and Serge Atakayi saw his drive blocked by Michael Chambers as Wrexham were kept on the back foot.

Jamie Barjonas failed to hit the target as Rangers continued their good start while Wrexham countered and had their first chance in the 21st minute but Jason Oswell fired wide.

Back came Rangers and a curling effort from Barjonas failed to test Dibble but Wrexham went close as Leighton McIntosh brought a save out of keeper Kieran Wright.

There was another sight of goal following good work by Devonte Redmond whose cross reached Kyle Robinson-Murray but he cleared the bar from just inside the area.

However, Rangers took the lead in the 35th minute.

James Maxwell slid a pass through to Barjonas after Robinson-Murray lost the ball and the midfielder slotted past Dibble.

Rangers continued to press and Jonathan Flanagan's drive was tipped behind by Dibble who made a good save from Nathan Young-Coombes at the start of the second half.

Wrexham came more into the game without creating any clear cut chances with Chambers and Oswell unable to direct headers on target.

But Rangers made it 2-0 on 71 minutes.

Dibble spilled Barjonas' shot and Young-Coombes put away the loose ball.

Arron Lyall and Kai Kennedy brought saves out of Dibble but Rangers had already done enough.
