UPTON AA and Newton Athletic both sealed their places in to the Quarter Finals of the Cheshire Amateur Cup with hard-fought third round victories.

Todd Reid’s Upton AA side recovered from falling behind early on to secure a 4-2 home success over Knutsford, while Newton Athletic earned themselves a 3-2 away win against Govan Athletic.

Speaking after his side’s third round victory, Upton boss Todd Reid said: “I’m happy with us getting ourselves into the last eight.

“We want to do well in the cups that we’re involved in because they keep the season alive and give us a chance to give all of our players game time.

“We conceded first, but I’m delighted with the reaction from the lads to come from behind and eventually get ourselves a comfortable win.

“It took us about 25 minutes to settle into the game, but once we did, we were in control. After having two goals disallowed, we got ourselves an equaliser just before half-time and then we dominated most of the second half.

“It’s good to see Newton Athletic still in the competition, and now hopefully the cup can stay in Chester after Blacon won the tournament last year.”

Newton, who are in Division Two of the Cheshire Football League, put themselves into the last eight courtesy of a 3-2 away win at Govan Athletic.

And Reid adds: “They’re not a team to be underestimated. They’re doing well in their league, and they keep getting the results in this cup too.

Altrincham FC Reserves, Heswall, Vauxhall Motors Reserves, and Ellesmere Port Town each booked their places in the quarter finals alongside Upton AA and Newton Athletic after coming out on top in their respective third-round fixtures.

Two places are still up for grabs in the last eight, with Broadheath Central hosting Cheadle Town Reserves, and Lostock Gralam welcoming Holmes Chapel Hurricanes on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it took penalties to separate Blacon Youth Club and Chester Nomads in their Chester Challenge Cup clash.

The local derby ended in a 1-1 draw between the two sides, before Blacon’s rustiness from not playing in the past several weeks shone through as they lost 2-0 on penalties.
