MORE than 5,000 residents in the Cheshire West and Chester area have been handed liability orders for non-payment of council tax.

Chester Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday, June 9 that Cheshire West and Chester Council was seeking liability orders in respect of 5,053 residents who were not up to date with their council tax payments.

Magistrates handed the liability orders for all 5,053 residents, and all have been ordered to pay £80 costs.

Liability orders are a legal demand for payment, and have been sent to residents who have not paid council tax despite reminder letters being sent to their addresses.

CWaC can seek the money owed from residents' wages directly, from benefits, via bailiffs or, in the most extreme cases, taking the non-payer to court, where the resident could face a prison sentence of up to three months.
