PLANS have been lodged to turn a former hair salon into a new restaurant and bar in Chester city centre.

The change of use application – put forward by Chester Market-based Death By Tacos – is for the vacant building at 53 Watergate Street.

The proposals include a new front door, replacing the existing shopfront glazing with bi-fold windows, and installation of new signage.

The planning application, submitted by Wattle and Daub Architects Ltd on behalf of the applicant, states: "53 Watergate Street is a 1960s building situated on the ground floor/lower ground floor of a four-storey building.

"The site is located within the Chester City Conservation Area. The existing building and shopfront do not make a positive contribution to the heritage significance of the conservation area.

"The proposal seeks planning permission to change of use from A1 hair salon to A4 restaurant/bar, replace the glazing on the existing shopfront with bi-fold windows, replace this existing shop front door, and install new signage.

"The proposed changes are modest and would not result in any harm to the character and appearance of the conservation area. The significance of the heritage asset would not be adversely affected by the proposal.

"There is no change to the current access arrangement as a result of this application."
