PLANS have been put forward to turn a former Chester city centre church building into a yoga studio.

The change of use application is for the old Penri Welsh Baptist Chapel on Gorse Stacks.

The proposal would create one full-time role and six part-time positions.

The planning application has been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council by Laira Young who intends to lease the property and run regular wellness classes for the community.

The yoga studio would be open Monday to Friday from 6.30am until 9.30pm, on Saturday from 7.30am until 9.30pm, and on Sunday from 8.30am until 10pm.

According to the planning application, it is understood that the church has been unused for around 15 years.

The chapel has been on the market since August last year.

In a supporting letter accompanying the application, owner Sarah Ramsden states: "During that period we have not received nor refused any offers for community usage.

"In the absence of other suitable interest, I support Laira's application to lease the property as a yoga studio.

"I am especially supportive of the community engagement and benefit arising from such a business."
