Frodsham councillors could be cut from 16 to 12 under plans

Cheshire West and Chester Council is inviting residents and stakeholders to take part in the final phase of a community governance review for Frodsham Town Council, which could see the number of councillors reduced from 16 to 12 and the removal of all existing wards.

Councillor Rachel Waterman, chair of the Community Governance Review Committee, said: "We welcome the engagement we have already received from residents, community organisations and stakeholders throughout this review and would encourage anyone with a view on these proposals to submit their final comments.

"Town and parish councils play an important role in local democracy.

"They provide a direct link between residents and decision-makers and help shape the future of our communities.

"It is important that governance arrangements remain effective, representative and fit for the future, and that is why we want to hear from as many people as possible before final recommendations are made."

The review, originally requested by Frodsham Town Council, follows two previous rounds of consultation and aims to determine whether current governance arrangements remain appropriate.

Under the latest recommendations, all 12 councillors would represent Frodsham as a single parish area starting from the May 2027 local elections.

The Castle Park, Frodsham Lakes, Frodsham Waterside and Overton Five Crosses wards would also be scrapped.

The first round of consultation drew only a limited response, prompting a second round that included a letter to every household in Frodsham.

Due to the low response rate and the cost of a wider postal survey, this final consultation is being conducted electronically and through direct engagement with key organisations and stakeholders.

Residents have until Thursday, October 1, 2026, to submit their views by emailing democraticservices@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk with "Frodsham Community Governance Review" in the subject line.

All feedback will be reviewed by the Community Governance Review Committee ahead of its meeting on Monday, October 12, 2026, where final recommendations will be considered.
