New Michael Owen family documentary drops on Amazon Prime

The six-part Prime Video documentary series, Meet the Owens, follows the life of the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and England striker, his wife Louise and their four children as they balance family life with the demands of running a horse racing business.

The Owen family live in the Grade II listed home in Sychdyn, between Mold and Northop.

According to Prime Video, the documentary was filmed over the course of a year and follows Owen as he attempts to grow his horse racing operation while navigating the challenges of family life. The series also charts a period of change for the family as their children pursue increasingly independent lives.

Viewers will see youngest daughter Jessica pursue ambitions in showjumping, while Emily hopes to become the first member of the family to attend university. Son James, who lives with the degenerative eye condition Stargardt disease, is looking to build a future within the family racing business.

A major storyline centres on Gemma Owen, who has built a successful media career since appearing on Love Island in 2022. The documentary follows her as she takes on a new challenge, training to compete in horse racing under the guidance of her father.

Speaking about the project, Owen said the programme originally focused on his racing business before evolving into a broader look at family life. He described it as an opportunity for the public to see a different side of his personality after decades in the spotlight as one of England's best-known footballers.

The former striker enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning the Ballon d'Or in 2001 and scoring 40 goals for England before retiring from professional football in 2013. Since then, he has devoted much of his time to horse racing and managing Manor House Stables.

All six episodes of Meet the Owens were released on Prime Video on August 28.
