CONFIRMATION of the opening date for Northwich's long-awaited Chester-style market is almost certainly just around the corner.
Located within Barons Quay itself, and part of a wider regeneration of the town centre, the new retail and dining outlet will feature a mix of food, drink, and shopping options.
Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) says a final opening date will be confirmed in the coming weeks, and it is confident this will be towards around mid September.
It added work on the site progressing, and traders are preparing to begin their fit outs.
Cllr Nathan Pardoe, CWAC cabinet member for inclusive economy, regeneration, and digital transformation, said: "Many residents will have fond memories of the old market in Weaver Square, which first opened in the 1960s.
"Times and public expectations have changed since, and at a time when other councils are closing or withdrawing from markets, this council recognises markets remain important to town centres."
The existing market stalls in Weaver Square will close on Saturday, August 29, however the Market Hall Café will remain open at its current location, and customers will continue to have access as usual.
Businesses located on the exterior of the former Market Hall, such as Askins and Colins Hair, will also be unaffected and will continue to operate.
Cllr Pardoe added:"The brand new Northwich Market will offer a much-improved experience for visitors and traders, including a prominent location within Barons Quay, fully accessible social space, indoor and outdoor seating, free WiFi, public toilets, and a greater variety of food, drinks, and goods traders.
"We are all looking forward to a new chapter for Northwich Market, and seeing it thrive again."
CWAC says it has supported existing market traders during the transition, though not all opted to transfer.
The Style Hut will move to the new market, while others have been offered spaces in Winsford Market, or have sought alternative trading premises.
All traders were consulted about the plans and given free business support to help with applications to the new market.
The project is part of a larger vision for Northwich town centre, developed in partnership with ION Developments.
Plans for Weaver Square include around 200 new homes, improved public areas, flexible event space, and a proposed bus hub.
