Chester Philharmonic Orchestra will conclude its concert season with a performance titled The Power of Three.
The concert will take place at Chester Cathedral on Saturday, June 27, at 7.30pm and will feature a selection of works by Brahms, Sibelius, and Douglas Lilburn.
Diana Anderson, chair of Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, said: "As we bring our current season of concerts to a close, we are delighted to be joined by Xander Croft and Robin Wallington for this special concert showcasing works by three very different composers.
"It promises to be an evening not to be missed."
The programme opens with the Drysdale Overture by New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn and continues with Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, performed by guest soloist Xander Croft.
Mr Croft, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, plays a 1750 Tommaso Carcassi violin on loan from The Harrison-Frank Family Foundation.
In June 2024 he was awarded third prize with the Elmore Quartet at the prestigious Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the UK and in Europe, with highlights including a tour of Scotland, performance at Wigmore Hall, concerts in Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, and performances of Bruch and Mendelssohn violin concertos.
The concert also features Brahms’ Third Symphony and a guest appearance by conductor Robin Wallington, who will direct the orchestra for the evening.
Mr Wallington is known for his versatility across both established and contemporary classical repertoire.
He has worked widely in opera, serving as music director and supervisor for OperaUpClose and as assistant conductor for English Touring Opera.
He is also a professional composer, arranger, and editor, with experience arranging for the BBC Philharmonic and for crossover projects.
Mr Wallington has conducted his own arrangements on live television, including broadcasts for BBC's Children in Need.
He is particularly known for his work with 20th-century British music and has recorded lesser-known works by composers such as Bax, Moeran, and Carwithen for BBC Radio 3 and others.
