A choir is set to close its season on a high note with a lively jazz-themed performance.
Chester Bach Singers will present its final concert of the season, Spring Jazz, at the Wesley Church Centre in Chester city centre at 4pm on May 16.
The programme features Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis and Bob Chilcott’s arrangements of The House of the Rising Sun and Scarborough Fair.
Helen Crich, chair of Chester Bach Singers, said: "Come and join us on 16th May at the Wesley Church Centre for the final concert of our current season.
"We have an exciting and varied programme of music in a range of styles, as is the tradition for our annual Spring/Summer event. Alongside Will Todd's 'Jazz Missa Brevis', we are delighted to be performing Bob Chilcott's arrangements of 'The House of the Rising Sun' and 'Scarborough Fair' and his arrangements of five Japanese poems, 'Furusato'.
"We will also be performing 'I Carry Your Heart With Me', with music composed by our Musical Director Joseph Judge."
The concert will also include Chilcott’s setting of five Japanese poems and I Carry Your Heart With Me, a choral work by the choir’s musical director Joseph Judge based on the poem by E.E. Cummings.
They will be accompanied by a jazz trio on piano, bass and drums, under Judge’s direction.
Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis, a highlight of the programme, was written in 2015 for the choir of Portsmouth Cathedral and blends jazz harmonies with the traditional Latin Mass.
The choir recently held a workshop on the piece led by Todd himself.
Ms Crich said: "We will complete our programme with three songs in Hindi - 'Sŭnāō' which reflect on the power of listening and connection. We hope you will enjoy hearing them as much as we enjoy singing them, this concert is the perfect way to swing into Summer."
The choir is also preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary, with more details to be announced at the start of the next season.
