ON THIS DAY in 2021, the staff at Oliver and Co, a Chester law firm, announced their commitment to supporting Claire House Children's Hospice as their charity for the 2020/21 year.
Based on Foregate Street, Oliver and Co chose to dedicate its fundraising efforts to this local charity, which provides essential support to seriously and terminally ill children and their families.
Since its opening in December 1998, Claire House had expanded significantly, initially supporting just 10 families but now assisting over 400.
It offers specialised nursing care, alongside emotional and practical support, facilitated by a team of trained professionals including nurses, physiotherapists, play specialists, and counsellors.
Typically, Oliver and Co would have engaged in fundraising activities such as dress down days, bake sales, and raffles.
However, due to the unique challenges posed by the year, including staff being furloughed or working from home, these traditional efforts were not feasible.
Despite the circumstances, staff orchestrated creative fundraising initiatives.
They launched their "10 for £10" challenge, organised weekly Zoom exercise class, and created a festive dress week, all contributing to the fundraising total.
Beginning this week five years ago, the employees committed to a new challenge titled "A Mile A Day For A Year."
Their goal was to walk, jog, or run at least one mile every day for the next 365 days.

Staff members planned to raise funds by seeking sponsorships from friends and family.
Additionally, the law firm pledged to donate to Claire House for every individual who remained consistent for 3, 6, 9, and 12 months without missing a day.
Employees expressed their enthusiasm for the challenge and committed to sharing updates on the firm’s social media accounts as they progressed.
