AN ATTRACTIVE and vibrant suburb, Hoole is one of Chester’s best-known areas, and its mix of top restaurants, cosy pubs, and independent shops, make it well worth a visit.

For many visitors, it’s the first thing that they see as they leave the M53 and head along the A56 towards the city centre.
The twinkling Christmas lights along Faulkner Street are postcard-worthy at this time of year, and it’s here that we’ll look first.
The volume and variety of independent shops here are one of the elements which make this area so special – in fact the Standard spoke with a handful of retailers earlier this month to get their thoughts on Christmas stocking fillers .
There’s plenty of interesting gifts and clothing stores, but you’ll also find traditional trades like Pioneer Shoe Repairs, Hoole Food Market, Honeysuckle Florist, Hoptons the Butchers and Bricklands Seafood and Game.
If you’re going out for something to eat, this area also has a lot to offer, and many of its restaurants have become firm favourites in the city.

There’s the likes of The Faulkner, Made in Italy, Shanghai Restaurant, and Sticky Walnut, among others and popular pubs include, but are not limited to, The Piper, The Bromfield Arms, The Lodge Bar and the Lock Vaults.
Usher’s Bakehouse, at the end of Lightfoot Street, offers pastries, cakes and hot drinks to eat in or take away and Short + Stout, tucked away in Ermine Road, is a tasty breakfast spot.
The Hoole Community Centre, in Westminster Road, is an institution within the area.
Home to Hoole Library and the popular Hobson’s Café, the centre hosts regular events throughout the year, working to engage and support residents of all ages.
This, coupled with green spaces like Hoole Narrows and Alexandra Park make the area a desirable destination for many families in the city.
House prices in Hoole have an overall average of £316,990 over the last year, according to Rightmove.
The majority of properties sold in Hoole during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £277,686.
Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £369,178, with flats fetching £170,368.
Overall, the historical sold prices in Hoole over the last year were similar to the previous year and 5% up on the 2022 peak of £302,972.
