Wirral transformed into set of Hollywood movie Clayface

Streets in Wirral have been turned into a DC universe for the filming of Clayface, a shapeshifting villain who is a recurring enemy of Batman.

The latest superhero film is directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. It will be the third film in the DC Universe.

Tom Rhys Harrie stars as Clayface alongside Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella.

Streets around Liverpool’s Pier Head, the former Merseyside Police HQ on Canning Place, Derby Square, and Liverpool Crown Court have all been transformed into Gotham City film sets in recent weeks for the latest release, which is due to hit cinemas next year.

Film crews have also been seen at the old Birkenhead tunnel entrance on Rendel Street as well as Seacombe Ferry Terminal.

This week, film crews are in New Brighton and have already been spotted setting up on Tollemache Street.

A letter sent out to local businesses and residents in the area said filming would take place at Adventureland in New Brighton on Thursday, September 11.

The letter set from Velocity Productions Ltd read: “We would like to inform you about the upcoming filming we are planning at Adventureland for a new film called ‘Corinthians’.

“We are proposing to film scenes outside Adventureland on Thursday, 11th September. The scenes involve characters walking down Marine Promenade and having a conversation in one of the shops. We will have a cast and crew of approximately 150 people, as well as a security presence on the day.”

Despite official filming taking place on Thursday, the shoot dates and times state that a prep day will take place on Monday, September 8, between 8am and 6pm and Thursday, September 11 until 5pm, filming will take place on Thursday, September 11 from 7pm until 5.30am and strike will take place on Friday, September 12 from 6am to 10pm.

In order to facilitate the shoot, crews will park vehicles on Marine Promenade to will employ security guards who will cone the area from when crews start prep to help with car clearance on Monday, September 8.

Crews will also be parking in Perch Road car park which will be closed from September 10-12.

The letter continues: “We have asked Wirral Council for a road closure of Marine Promenade for our shoot. The road closure will be in place from September 11 6pm until September 12, 12am.

“We will make sure emergency access is ensured at all times.

“We understand that filming on location can cause disruption to the area. We are working in partnership with the Liverpool Film Office to bring these plans together with the least amount of disruption to the residents and businesses in the local area. I would like to reassure you that we will do everything possible to minimise out impact.”
