Four decades after the world's greatest pop stars played two concerts to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia, a Live Aid 40 festival is being staged in Cheshire to mark the anniversary.

The music and family fun event at Verdin Park, Northwich, features 12 tribute acts honouring those who performed at Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia in July 1985.

Taking place on the evening of Friday, July 11, and all day on Saturday, July 12, the family-friendly festival also has performances from local choirs and schools.

There will also be a children’s village with a glitter bar, sand art, bracelet-making, a tuck shop, games and a quiet space with books.

Live Aid 40, with 16 hours of live music, is being run by Radio Northwich co-owners and presenters Kim Smith and John Thompson.

Kim said: "This is Radio Northwich's biggest and most ambitious event yet, celebrating the team’s love of music and desire to raise funds for the two charities close to hosts’ and listeners’ hearts – Brain Tumour Research and Simply the Breast at Mid Cheshire Hospitals.

"The event has some of the best tribute acts in the business and there's fun for all the family. There are bars and a choice of food stalls.

"It's going to be fabulous."
