On this day in 2024, a hard-working and considerate Asda employee in Ellesmere Port received community praise for his kind act.
Alex, 22, who worked on the checkout tills, was hailed an "absolute angel" after he came to the aid of a mother who was unable to pay for sweets for her son when her Apple Pay app stopped working.
The mother shared her gratitude on the Ellesmere Port Facebook group Pride in the Port, stating: "He's always lovely, but today my little boy picked some sweets and my card kept declining and without hesitation he paid for them himself.
"He's an absolute angel.
"Thank you so much."
Numerous customers joined in to commend Alex, with comments such as: "He is amazing/ Such a lovely lad and always so helpful," "Always so cheerful and helpful," and "Alex you are a treasure."
Janet Mcveigh, the mother, expressed her pride, saying she was "very proud of him."
Alex, who had been with the store since 2020, mentioned that he did not want to be reimbursed for the sweets, which cost about £5, as it brought a smile to the boy's face.
The store's customer service manager remarked: "Alex is a valued member of our team, always going above and beyond for our customers.
"We’re always receiving lovely comments about how bubbly and friendly he is.
"He’s always putting a smile on our customers' faces.
"He is a credit to our store and we’re very lucky to have him."
Following the incident, Alex was nominated for an Asda service superstar award and was also named colleague of the month.
The Facebook post about his act of kindness received an outpouring of positive comments from other Asda customers, who described him as "always friendly, helpful and smiling," "a lovely cheerful lad," and "a massive asset to Asda."
