The police helicopter was deployed in Chester on Monday night amid reports of a man carrying an axe.

The incident was reported to police at 8pm, with the helicopter seen hovering around the Sealand Road and Garden Quarter area of the city.

But it turned out there was a much more innocent explanation when police caught up with the man - as he had been gardening at the allotments.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 8pm on Monday 30 April police were called to reports of a man who was believed to be carrying an axe in the Sealand Road area of Chester.

"Officers were deployed to the area, with the support of the police helicopter,  and following a search the man was located in the Bumpers Lane area.

"The man was initially arrested on suspicion of affray; however, it was quickly established that the man had been gardening at the allotments and the item he was carrying was a gardening tool.

"The man was subsequently released without charge."
