IT was always going to be a classic sporting weekend.

The Grand National, The Masters and Wrexham rising to promotion once again!

Mullins may have been the main man at Aintree but super Paul Mullin’s the man Wrexham turn to and he was the front-runner again with two goals in a 6-0 stuffing of Forest Green on another day Reds’ supporters here, there and everywhere will never forget.

You just couldn’t have written the script at The Racecourse on Saturday afternoon.

Reds’ boss Phil Parkinson didn’t envisage everything going his way, admitting he was planning to celebrate promotion next weekend at Crewe.

But magic happens at this proud football club that has been awoken from its slumber by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who described this adventure as the ‘ride of our lives.’

How fitting that Wrexham clinched a second successive promotion - the first time they’ve done that in their history - just hours before McElhenney, whose brainchild it was to buy Wrexham, celebrated his 47th birthday.

Thinking about it, maybe it is McElhenney who is writing the script in what is turning out to be a blockbuster.

Mansfield and Gillingham played their part in helping Wrexham get over the line just nine days short of the first anniversary of the National League title triumph.

They produced the goods against Boreham Wood that day but Saturday’s stunning display will take some beating - although the 7-1 rout of Rotherham to celebrate promotion to Division Two in 1978 was special.

Very special, in fact.

Elliot Lee, who set Wrexham on their way with the first goal in the 6-0 victory over Forest Green, described the club as special in his post-match interview where he also questioned how team-mate Eoghan O’Connell knew the Mansfield and Barrow scores when the players were still on the pitch counting down the seconds.

There’s those magical powers again. And Wrexham will need them next season in what will be a much tougher division.

But the way this club has progressed, who could possibly rule out a hat-trick of promotions.

One thing you can count on is that it’s racing certainty that Wrexham will come back next August bigger and stronger for the next chapter in their wonderful history.
