A Chester city centre restaurant which has been open for only eight months has already scooped a national award.

Twenty eight, opened as the sister venue to the Michelin-recommended Chef's Table, has already been collecting accolades, taking home the Best Newcomer and the Silver recognition for Sustainability at last year’s Taste Cheshire Food and Drink Awards.

It has now added a national accolade to its name, receiving ‘Readers’ Favourite’ at Condé Nast Traveller’s new awards series, which highlights the top new venues across the UK.

The Pepper Street venue centres around a growing-led concept, with help from its partnered Daresbury farm, Growing @ Field 28.

Led by head chef Jay Tanner, the ever-changing menu offers locally sourced fresh produce in the form of tapas-style dishes, with both British and international influence.

Condé Nast Traveller is the internationally renowned magazine for high-end travel, as well as food, drink and leisure.

Newly introduced for 2024, the ‘Top New Restaurant Awards’ highlights the best of what the UK’s growing hospitality scene has to offer, from fine-dining and unique concepts in major cities to up-and-coming chef’s and venues off the beaten track.

The ‘Reader’s Favourite’ was selected via an online voting system across social media, whereby the public were able to choose their top new restaurants around the UK.

To accept the award, the twenty eight team attended the official awards ceremony in London’s Shoreditch Arts Club on Monday, March 18. Celebrating amongst those selected as the UK’s best new venues, they were also joined by some of the industry’s most respected chefs, restaurateurs and food critics, including Andi Oliver, Angela Hartnett OBE and Tom Parker-Bowles.

Chef Jay Tanner said: “It’s great to have been recognised by Condé Nast Traveller and our previous diners for this award.

"Knowing that it was people's votes which helped us achieve this award is something we’re really thankful for.

"To attend the awards ceremony with some of the UK’s leading new venues across the food and drink scene too - it’s an honour and we couldn’t be more over the moon! This is just the start for us.”

It is also the venue's growing offering of cool events targeted at younger demographics that is cementing their status as a unique Chester venue. The return of its alter ego and pop-up, Siu Tang, is to take place on Wednesday, March 27. Combining the team's love of Asian cuisine and 90s hip-hop, the monthly event serves a unique menu of elevated takeaway classics alongside nostalgic tunes.
