A POPULAR Wirral high street Wetherspoons pub has closed.

In December 2023, it was announced that the pub giant had put 11 more pubs up for sale after several recent closures in the last few years.

The pub chain had already closed 33 establishments in town centres and high streets across the UK.

The Mockbeggar Hall JD Wetherspoon on Hoylake Road in Moreton was one of the 11 new pubs put up for sale.

At the time a spokesperson for the company said: “Wetherspoon confirms that it has decided to sell 11 of its 822 pubs which it has put on the market through property agents, Savills and CBRE.

“The pubs are mainly freehold properties with one leasehold property. The company is also proceeding with plans for a number of new pubs and hotels as well as major upgrades to existing pubs involving a total investment of around £100 million."

On Sunday, March 17, the Moreton pub closed its doors for good thanking customers and staff for their “loyalty over the years”.

Wetherspoon's spokesperson, Eddie Gershon, told the Globe: “We can confirm that The Mockbeggar Hall has now closed.

“We would like to thank our staff and customers for their loyalty over the years.

“Wetherspoon, does on occasion, close or sell some of its pubs, and this is the case here.”

The venue is rumoured to be reopening in May but what will be in its place is yet to be confirmed.
