LANES had to be closed on the M53 near Chester this morning (Tuesday, March 12) as firefighters tackled a car fire.

Two fire engines from Chester arrived at the scene at around 10am with traffic on the southbound stretch of the motorway brought to a halt.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fires and Rescue Service said: "The M53 southbound was at a standstill near Hoole Village as firefighters tackled a car fire.

"Lanes one and two were closed as the crews in breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet, dry powder and absorbent pads at the scene."
