PART of the M53 motorway is closed due to a lorry crash causing an oil spill.

The M53 is closed northbound between Junction 9 Ellesmere Port and Junction 8 due to a collision involving a lorry and a tipper truck.

As a result of the crash, one of the HGV’s has overturned and is leaking oil onto the carriageway.

The incident happened at around 10.27am.

Fire engines from Ellesmere Port, Chester, Powey Lane, Winsford and a rescue unit from Winsford are at the scene

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters are currently attending a road traffic collision involving two heavy goods vehicles.

"One vehicle is on its side and fluid is leaking onto the carrigeway.

"Crews are working to release one person from one of the vehicles and manage a spillage of hydraulic fluid on the carrigeway.

"The northbound carrigeway remains closed while firefighters work with specialist recovery vehicles and partner agencies at the scene.

North West Motorway Police and National Highways are at the scene.

National Highways confirmed the closure was an “ongoing incident” and that drivers should expect delays while a diversion route is being established.

North West Motorway Police have advised drivers to follow the hollow square for the diversion route.
