PLANS to convert a former Chester city centre bank into a new bar have taken a step closer.

Previously we reported that Popcorn Hospitality Ltd, which already operates a bar at The Exchange, St John Street, was looking to open a second venue in the city, next to the Abbey Gateway on Northgate Street.

That site was once home to The Co-operative Bank until it closed in 2020 as part of national cutbacks which saw 350 jobs go.

An application was submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council for a change of use at the empty Grade II-listed building. No building alterations were put forward, as the applicants wished to get permission for the change of use first before proceeding with development.

A planning officer for the local authority noted the proposal "would reinstate vitality to the city centre and would improve the frontage of the retail core," acknowledging the premises had now been empty for "an extended period of time" and had faded signage.

The officer added: "Moreover, the proposal would increase footfall and interest to the rows, promoting a strong evening economy."

The application was approved subject to conditions, including the opening hours being limited to 8am-midnight Monday-Saturday and 8am-11pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

A verified report is also to be submitted by the applicants to demonstrate that nearby residents would be protected by noise levels.

Popcorn first opened its doors in Chester in September 2019, at the former Pitcher & Piano venue.
