A popular North Wales location has been named the best spot for a holiday in the UK.

Households across the UK are already beginning to plan their holidays for the year and GO Outdoors has released a list of the best holiday hotspots in the UK for those looking for the perfect staycation. 

From Tenby in south Wales to Ambleside near Lake Windermere, the outdoor experts have listed the top 10 UK spots those looking for a staycation in 2024 simply "must visit".

The study, conducted by outdoor experts at GO Outdoors, explored the number of hiking trails, biking, nature and wildlife tours.

It also looked at the average cost of local transport and how popular the destination is to create a holiday hotspot score.

The top 10 best holiday hotspots in the UK

The best spots for a holiday in the UK, according to GO Outdoors, are:

  2. Ambleside
  3. St Ives
  4. Bakewell
  5. Whitby 
  6. Matlock
  7. Tenby
  8. Rye 
  9. Padstow
  10. Braemar

North Wales locations among the UK's best holiday hotspots

Betws-y-Coed was named the best spot for a holiday in the UK by GO Outdoors. 

It scored 8.4 out of 10 in the GO Outdoors study boasting the highest number of things to do (per 10,000 people) out of any place on the list with 691.

It also had the highest number of nature and wildlife tours, bike tours and hiking trails.

The experts described Betws-y-Coed as a "delightful village" with "the perfect Welsh welcome".

GO Outdoors added: "Perfect for holiday-goers, Betws-y-coed is a gateway to Snowdonia and its neighbouring towns.

"Inviting you into a distinctly magical setting surrounded by forests, walking trails such as the Cyrau Walk, and mountain bike tours on routes such as the Gwydir Mawr and Bach, there’s no denying that Betws-y-coed has plenty to offer.

Llandudno also featured among the best holiday hotspots in the UK.

It ranked in 16th place on an extended top 20 list along with Anglesey (12th).
