REFUSE workers across Cheshire West have secured a pay rise after action by Unite members.

Around 170 workers voted to undertake industrial action, with employers Cheshire West Recycling offering an improved pay deal in response to the decision to strike. This offer has been accepted by the workers.

The deal comprises an increase of £1.25 on the hourly rate – worth between seven and 11.8 percent depending on grade – and will be backdated to April 2023. The deal also includes an increase of two days annual leave.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Well done to the works at Cheshire West Recycling, who stood together, voted for industrial action and compelled their employer to offer a much-improved deal.

“Securing pay rises such as this is Unite’s bread and butter – our top priority is to improve members’ jobs, pay and conditions.”

Unite regional officer Samantha Marshall said: “The determination of Unite’s member ensured Cheshire West Recycling returned to the negotiating table and made a pay offer that met their aspirations."

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson said:

“We are pleased that discussions have now concluded, with Cheshire West Recycling reaching agreement with its trade unions and workforce.

"The settlement has taken on board the current national economic situation and concerns over cost of living pressures.

"This agreement means there will be no industrial action and we look forward to continuing to deliver a quality household waste and recycling service for Cheshire West and Chester residents through our committed workforce.”
