A SPECTACULAR lights event is set to illuminate Chester Cathedral from next month.
'Discovery' a new immersive experience by Luxmuralis will bring stunning art for visitors to explore as they view the city's historic Cathedral in a whole new light.
The installation - a first for Chester - will give visitors the opportunity to ponder our relationship with the planet Earth and beyond. Installations of sound and light art will aim to take them on a journey through space, see galaxies emerge above you and explore humanity's ambition to adventure beyond.
There will be original footage of the Apollo 11 rocket launch, an exploration of the Big Bang and the final image of Earth as if looking back from space under a galaxy of stars.
Other elements of Discovery are designed to enable people to explore and contemplate the contributions of science and human understanding of the physical world around us.
The artwork will explore chemistry and biology and interpret artistically the scale of molecules cells and DNA as well as exploring the history of science and its contributions to humanity, while reflecting upon famous scientists past and present.
The Very Revd Dr Tim Stratford, Dean of Chester says: "I’m excited to commence 2024 with such an awe-inspiring event. Peter Walker, and the Luxmuralis team have created events in cathedrals nationally, and it’s fantastic to bring one to Chester. A first for the city!"
"Our visitors were stunned by the ‘Once a Desert’ installation in the Cathedral nave in 2022, however, Discovery will be much larger, and illuminate most of the Cathedral interior. It really will be outstanding."
The artistic collaboration - known as ‘Luxmuralis’, which means ‘light murals’ in Latin - create large scale, site specific installations taking art and creativity to varied spaces across the UK and Europe.
Artist Peter Walker says: "Luxmuralis create the stained glass windows of our time, by this we mean we use contemporary art to bring to life ideas which stained glass windows would have done centuries before. The installation allows us to look at such concepts, from the vastness of space to the smallest things ever discovered, from the uniqueness of earth to its fragility.
"The installation is for people of all ages to walk through a truly immersive fine art experience with almost every inch of the Cathedral bathed in light and sound, and the chance to sit on the floor and watch the universe unfold before you."
Discovery will open on Wednesday, February 21 until Saturday, February 24. The event will open at 5.45pm with show times through until 8.30pm daily. Further information and ticketing is available at: https://chestercathedral.com/.
