A PROLIFIC shoplifter stole gift sets from The Perfume Shop and Boots in Chester.

Craig Lambert, 49, of Lower Bridge Street, pleaded guilty to the two theft offences when he appeared at the city’s magistrates court.

Nicola Parr, prosecuting told the court that Lambert stole a Gillette gift set worth £50 from Boots on November 18 last year, then five days later stole a gift set worth £62 from The Perfume Shop in the city.

Chris Hunt, defending, said Lambert had a lengthy record for shoplifting but suffered with mental health issues, and is now turning a corner in addressing his struggles.

Mr Hunt said: “He’s got a life blighted by drugs, drink and homelessness.

“He’s made massive strides in the right direction over the last few years from where he used to be.”

A report was also read out to the court by the probation service which said Lambert, who was already on a community order, had complied well.

District Judge John McGarva revoked the previous order and handed Lambert a fresh 18 month community order which will enable him to carry out a six-month mental health treatment.

Despite not having to pay court costs, Lambert was ordered to pay £62 in compensation to The Perfume Shop as the goods were not recovered, and a £52 victim surcharge.
