THIS year's New Year's Honours list features four recipients from Cheshire West.

Awarded by King Charles, those who receive honours are often given these on recommendation by the prime minister or outgoing prime ministers.

The honours system is designed to recognise those who have made achievements in public life or those who have committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.

Among this year's recipients are Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood, legendary music icon Dame Shirley Bassey, Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke and England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

From Cheshire West, the recipients are as follows:

  • Kathryn Rose Roberts from Chester (Chief Executive Officer, Association of Mental Health Provider) is awarded a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to Mental Health.
  • Kenneth Salter from Ellesmere Port receives a Bar to the Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) for services to the community in Ellesmere Port.
  • Anne Jones from Neston receives a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the community in Neston.
  • Thomas Daniel Critchley, from Tarporley, (Data Scientist, Prime Minister's Office) receives an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Evidence-Based Policy.

Those receiving an honour will be invited to an Investiture where they will be presented with their Insignia by The King or a Member of the Royal Family. Investitures usually take place at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in the presence of the recipient’s family or close friends.

Due to the community nature of British Empire Medals (BEM), they are presented locally by Lord-Lieutenants (His Majesty’s local representative). BEM recipients are also invited to attend a Royal Garden Party.
