A MAN has admitted using homophobic verbal abuse towards another person at a Chester pub.

Luke Jackson-Fowler, 22, of Somerville Close, Little Neston, pleaded guilty when he appeared at Chester Magistrates Court charged with using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence.

Andrew Madden, prosecuting, said the incident happened just after 9pm at the Liverpool Arms pub on Northgate Street in Chester on July 13.

He added that police attended in response to claims that a customer, Jackson-Fowler, was making comments that were homophobic in nature and the complainant feared violence.

Robert Edwards, defending, said Jackson-Fowler “had been going through a bad time in July”.

“He doesn’t have any recollection of the incident”, Mr Edwards said.

“He acted stupidly and apologises for his behaviour.

“It’s a bit out of character, he was going through a fairly difficult time.

“He’s stood up, accepted responsibility and is very sorry. His drinking has curtailed significantly.”

Chair of the magistrates bench Peter Walsh requested that a pre-sentence report be produced by the probation service before Jackson-Fowler is sentenced.

Sentencing was adjourned until January 15, with Jackson-Fowler on bail until then on the condition that he is not to go to the Liverpool Arms.
