THE M6 northbound remains closed in Cheshire following a serious collision which resulted in a person being airlifted to hospital.

At 7.48am today (Monday, December 11) police were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the M6 northbound, at Thelwall Viaduct. 

Officers attended the scene and found the collision involved two HGVs, a white Ford Zetec and a white Ford Kuga.

Fire and ambulance were called to the scene and the road was closed in both directions to allow air ambulance to land.

One person has sustained a serious chest injury as a result of the collision, they have been taken to hospital via air ambulance. A number of other casualties have been taken to hospital by paramedics. 

The southbound carriageway reopened at around 9.10am, but the northbound carriageway remains closed at this time.
