Cheshire West: Man jailed after attacking neighbour with golf club

Paul Devey, of Barton Court Winsford,, appeared at Chester Crown Court on November 14, where he was found guilty after trial.

Police officers had attended Barton Court at around 8am on May 26 earlier this year when an incident involving the 41-year-old was called in.

It was reported Devey had knocked on his victim's front door and waited outside while wielding a golf club.

Once the victim had opened the door and stepped out, Devey shouted 'I'm going to kill you' before taking a swing towards his head.

After missing with his initial swing, Devey took another swipe, this time hitting the victim on the right side of his face.

The attack caused the victim severe pain, blurred vision and a cut to his eyebrow.

The victim ran back inside his home, locked the door and called the police while Devey continued to shout outside the address.

Officers attended and arrested Devey at the scene.

Devey denied charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at a hearing on November 7.

But he was convicted a week later, with Judge Michael Leeming sentencing him to a total of 18 months in prison.

Judge Leeming also imposed a 10-year restraining order banning Devey from approaching, contacting or communicating with his victim directly or indirectly.

An order was also made to deprive the defendant of the golf club and for him to pay a surcharged of £187.
