A CHESTER pub is being sold but a petition has been set up pleading for it not to be turned into a restaurant.

The owners of the Brewers Arms on Liverpool Road in Upton say a sale has been agreed for the pub which was listed on property website Rightmove for £495,000.

But they say they will not disclose who the buyer is and what their plans may be for the pub, previously known as The Frog and then The Countess.

A petition has been set up by locals who want it to remain a pub as rumours swirl that there are plans to change it into an Indian restaurant.

The online petition, which at the time of writing has around 200 signatures, states: “The best pub in Upton is under threat of being sold and being turned into an Indian restaurant.

“This pub means a lot to the people of Upton as it is their local get away and has a lot of memories for some. The result of this will threaten the history of the pub and it potentially being a pub again.

"Currently the landlords of the Brewers Arms have prices that are perfect and fabulous food and drink to offer. All food is fresh and sensational and for the price it is just something that can’t be competed with.

“The staff are outstanding, with a warm welcome and friendly attitude they make you feel more like a friend than a customer. Any needs or questions they are there to answer and make sure you feel comfortable.”

The petition says staff are “absolutely exceptional with children and for parents/guardians that is something many wish for which makes your dining experience a lot more relaxed and enjoyable”.

It adds: “Please save the pub and allow them to continue to grow.”

The Brewers Arms dates back to the 1800s.

A spokesperson for Stonegate Pub Partners, who own the pub, said: “The Brewers Arms, Chester is in the process of being sold.

“We do not disclose details of the purchaser and cannot comment on the future plans of the site.”
