AFTER flooding saw several roads, train stations and schools closed across the county due to adverse weather from Storm Babet, the government have issued two flood alerts for Cheshire West.

According to the UK Government Flood Warning Information Service, flood alerts are currently in place for the River Dee catchment area in England from Whitchurch to Chester and the River Gowy catchment including areas around Frodsham.

Flood alerts are issued for areas in which flooding is 'possible', however they are not as severe as a flood warnings in which flooding is 'expected'.

Despite the two flood alerts, the flood forecast - which is produced using information from the Met Office and Environment Agency - states that the risk is 'very low'.

River Dee affecting Chester and nearby areas

Regarding Chester and nearby areas, the government website states: "River levels remain high at the Farndon river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall from storm Babet. We believe there is a possibility of flooding for properties along the English River Dee in Farndon. Townfield lane is currently cut off.

"No further rainfall is expected today."

The flood alert area covers areas around Shocklach, Farndon, Handley, Lower Kinnerton, Chester and Puddington.

Residents in the area are advised to avoid low lying footpaths or entering areas which have previously been prone to flooding.

The flood alert area includes the River Milton and Hornsmill/Hool, Stanney Mill and Thornton Brooks and their tributaries.

The graphic also shows areas of Ellesmere Port and Helsby could be affected.

Incident staff are understood to be monitoring the situation closely across both areas and information is regularly updated via the website.
