It was like father, like son as history repeated itself in a Chester Golf Club competition.

Thirty years after his father Richard won the Faldo 7 Iron golf contest, eight-year-old Lucca Jones triumphed in the tournament.

Lucca scored 21 points in the nine-hole Stableford competition and was really excited to win such a prestigious trophy in his young golfing career.

The Juniors have played the “Faldo 7 iron” tournament since Graham Thomas donated Nick Faldo’s 7-iron to Chester Golf Club in 1989. The 7-iron was one of Nick Faldo’s first clubs, which originally came from JC Beardmore, Chester Golf Club’s professional between 1942 and 1953.

On winning the event, Lucca said: “It was so exciting to win the same competition as my dad won when he was in the junior section at the club and it’s even better to get to hold one of Nick Faldo’s first clubs as he is Britain’s best ever golfer.

"Hopefully I can win it again one day as my dad won it twice!”

Father Richard, who won the trophy in 1993, said: "It was lovely for Lucca to win the event and it inspired Lucca’s grandparents to dig out a picture from the loft from when I won 30 years ago.

"It brought back a few memories and it’s amazing to be able to see the two pictures next to each other.

"Josh Halewood is doing a great job of getting the junior section growing at the club and it’s brilliant that the children have exciting events like the Faldo 7-iron event to play in.”
