THE M53 will remain closed this afternoon following a major bus crash this morning (Friday, September 29).

At around 8am a bus carrying school pupils from West Kirby Grammar School and Calday Grange Grammar School struck a reservation on Junction 5 of the M53.

National Highways have confirmed that the motorway between Junction 5 Hooton and Junction 4 Bebington will remain closed this afternoon as investigation work is carried out by North West Motorway Police.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M53 will remain closed this afternoon in both directions between J5 Hooton and J4 Bebington following this morning’s serious incident. Collision investigation work will be undertaken by North West Motorway Police.”

Travel and traffic tracker, INRIX, states: “M53 both ways closed, heavy traffic due to overturned coach from J5 A41 New Chester Road (Eastham) to J4 A5137 Brimstage Road (Bebington). The incident occurred at around 08:15 this morning. Diversion: Via the solid circle diversion symbol for northbound traffic and the hollow diamond symbol for southbound traffic.”

Police, paramedics, and fire crews have been at the scene with 50 people being assessed at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Arrowe Park. One female patient was taken to the hospital, suffering major trauma-related injuries.
