A man was hit and killed by a car on the M62 in Cheshire.

The motorway is closed in both directions between junction 11, for Birchwood, and junction 12, Eccles Interchange, as police conducts its investigations.

The fatal collision occurred around 12.15am this morning, Tuesday.

Police and emergency services were called to reports of a pedestrian hit by a car.

A man, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Traffic remains heavy in the area, and National Highways North West report queues as far back as Burtonwood to the west, and Heywood to the east.

Drivers have been warned to avoid the area.  

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 12.15am on Tuesday  September 19, officers were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the M62.

“Emergency services attended the scene, and sadly an adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A 25-year-old man remained at the scene was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken to custody for further questioning.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this stage.

“The M62 between Eccles and Birchwood will be closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed through the morning while officers conduct their investigations.

“Alternative diversions are being put in place, please avoid the area.”
