THE first new Merseyrail train has arrived on the Wirral Line in time for The Open.

Around 250,000 people are expected to visit Wirral for The 151st Open Golf Championship this week.

The tournament is being held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake from tomorrow (Thursday, July 20) until Sunday, July 23.

On Twitter, Merseytravel confirmed today (Wednesday, July 19) that the roll-out of the new Class 777 trains is beginning on the West Kirby branch of the Wirral Line.

Their tweet said: "Your new trains are making their way over the Mersey from today, as the roll-out begins on the West Kirby branch of the Wirral Line. As part of the transport offer for The Open in Hoylake, one train is being introduced to help get golf fans to the event."

The roll-out of the new trains began earlier this year, with the Kirkby and Ormskirk lines now fully completed.

Merseytravel have said to "plan ahead, use public transport where possible and leave plenty of time to make sure you can get to and from" The Open.
