A CLASSIC British comedy is set to staged at a Chester theatre from this weekend.

An new twist on Compton Mackenzie's much-loved novel, Whisky Galore will pay tribute to the feisty all-female theatrical troupes who toured the country during the post-war years when it arrives at Chester Little Theatre in Gloucester Street.

The play, adapted by Philip Goulding, will run from Saturday, July 1, to Saturday, July 8, at 7.30pm. The production will be directed for Chester Little Theatre by Lexie Fox-Hutchings.

Combining physical theatre, panto and farce, with just seven performers playing dozens of roles between them, the play, set in 1955, tells the story of The Pallas Players, an all-female theatre company as they prepare to stage a production of Whisky Galore, Compton Mackenzie's classic tale about the islanders of Great and Little Todday who find their whisky supply dwindling as the Government diverts the precious liquor to the Americas.

Relief appears to be in hand when a 50,000 bottle cargo shipwrecks close by, until the meddling Captain Waggett of the Home Guard has other ideas.

Speaking about the production, Lexie Fox-Hutchings said: "The play is a hilarious tribute to both Compton Mackenzie's classic tale of the colourful characters of the Scottish isles as well as the all-female touring theatre troupes of the 1950s as seven performers take on dozens of roles, and tells the tale of a group of high spirited Scots with no spirits left and the seemingly divine intervention that brings them together.

"We can't wait for our audiences to see this rip-roaring comedy as we round off our current season."
