A NUMBER of improvements have been made in the city centre as part of a summer spruce up.

The initiatives have been rolled out Chester BID (Business Improvement District) in an effort to enhance the overall visitor experience.

It is hoped this will also extend dwell time, and create a more vibrant and inviting atmosphere for the businesses operating in the area.

Luka Morrell, business engagement manager has been leading the scheme, alongside a group of volunteers from local BID businesses.

In May, Chester BID spearheaded a city-wide flower planting campaign, bringing colourful displays to various locations including flowers along the Rows, beautiful three-tier planters, and the provision of hanging baskets and flower installations for local businesses.

Notable participants in the Planting Morning event included Wilko, Travelbag, Virgin Money, The Flower Cup, McDonald's, and Seasalt, who joined forces with the Chester BID team to install bee-friendly flowers.

Responding to feedback received from businesses, 17 new benches have been installed along Eastgate Street and The Cross as part of an initiative aimed at improving public spaces.

This project was jointly funded by Chester BID and the council’s crowdfunding platform Spacehive.

Luka said: “The replacement of the previous benches ensures the provision of comfortable seating for visitors, and certainly enhances the city's appeal!”

Over the next month, Chester BID will oversee the repainting of bollards within the city centre and the refurbishment of bike racks located outside the Coachworks Arcade.

“These renovations will contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality of the area, providing a more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists alike,” added Luka.

The highly popular Chester BID Mini Mural project will make a comeback this year with an exciting new map. Artists will be actively involved in refreshing their mini murals in preparation for the influx of summer holiday explorers.

Participants will also have the opportunity to design their own mini mural on the back of the map, entering a chance to win a £100 Chester Gift Card.

Expert judges, including Lisa Harman of Arthouse Café, Alex Sharp of Watergate Street Gallery, and Alison Bradley of the Alison Bradley Gallery, will select the winners. The map will be available for download from mid-July at experiencechester.co.uk or can be obtained from the Visitor Information Centre.

Chester BID CEO, Carl Critchlow said: “Chester BID remains dedicated to continuously improving the city centre and is committed to working with local businesses and key stakeholders to ensure the area meets the highest standards. These recent enhancements are part of the ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and thriving environment for both residents and visitors alike.”
