FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a number of grassfires across the weekend – one of which was believed to have been started deliberately.

Yesterday, Saturday, crews were called to Lodge Lane shortly after 5.15pm where they found a large grassfire near a school field.

They used beaters and water back packs to put out the flames.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The blaze covered an area of around 120 square metres and is thought to have been started deliberately.

“Anyone with information should call Cheshire Police on 101.”

Just under two hours later, at 7.07pm, crews arrived at Lilford Avenue, where a small patch of grass was on fire.

Beaters and water back packs were used again.

Later that evening, just before 9.26pm, firefighters responded to Manchester Road where fly-tipped waste – including a sofa – was alight on a roundabout.

A hose reel jet was used to put out the fire.
