RESIDENTS can take a trip in the vintage carriages of a posh, historic-style steam train.

The train will be stopping at Chester on a number of dates this year before embarking on a tour of the Yorkshire Dales.

The Settle & Carlisle Fellsman one-day return excursion with Saphos Trains will climb high towards the roof of England, taking in the dramatic scenery of great limestone peaks, even deeper valleys and the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct - a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.

There is also a chance for sightseeing in the historic border city of Carlisle.

The journey will start from Crewe, picking up from Chester, Frodsham, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western, Euxton Balshaw Lane, Blackburn and Clitheroe on the way.

The train will be steam hauled from Chester by one of the company’s beautifully restored engines. Three classes of travel are available:

Pullman Dining : Seating is in faithfully restored wood panelled vintage carriages at tables of 4 or 2 laid with crisp linen, fine crockery, fresh flowers, and glassware. The day starts with a glass of chilled bucks’ fizz, followed by a full English breakfast and late morning tea/coffee service with pastries prior to the arrival at our destination. Following an afternoon sightseeing break guests are welcomed aboard by a liveried steward with a glass of chilled champagne and selection of canapes. A sumptuous five course seasonal dinner, created by the onboard chef, will be served including the Great British cheese board and a half-bottle of wine per person. The memorable day concludes with a service of coffee and homemade petits fours. Pullman Dining costs from £350 per person.
