A FAST-EXPANDING local pub company has breathed new life into a 17th century village boozer, injecting its own unique brand of Cheshire country class.

The grade II-listed inn The Cock o' Budworth, on Cock Lane, Great Budworth, has been serving locals and travellers for 400 years, though until recently, you could be forgiven for thinking the pub hadn’t really moved with the times.

That was until the rapidly expanding Cheshire Pub Co formed their first partnership with Manchester brewery Joseph Holt, the pub’s long-time owners, who had been keeping the place ticking over as a managed house for a long time.

Now, after a four-month closure and full refurbishment, the new-look Cock o’ Budworth opened on Tuesday, February 21, with a launch event for villagers, regulars, and invited guests.

The launch gave them the chance to showcase their superb range of Holt's cask conditioned beers, trendy craft ale, thoughtfully chosen wines and spirits, and a new fresh and seasonal food menu, which is now served seven days a week.

Cheshire Pub Co’s head of brand, Jenny Bufton, said: “It had been running just as a Holt’s pub for a very long time. But last year, they realised they needed to insert something a little bit different. Maybe a more independent take on the food, the drink, and the service.

“We like to create talking points, like lovely reclaimed traditional furniture, as well as offering a bit of comfort and luxury.

"We’re also very into sustainability. We use a lot of reclaimed material when we refurbish each pub, and we like to reuse things when we can. That’s something we’re quite proud of.

“The food is just fresh, seasonal, great food. And to go with it, a very fine selection of carefully chosen wines.

“We also like to retain staff. We offer them great packages and training opportunities and really try to look after them."

This is the seventh pub from the Cheshire Pub Co, who had just two venues before lockdown.

Their othes include The Ship, Styal; The Frozen Mop in Knutsford; The Churchill Tree at Alderley Park; The Crown and Conspirator, Bramhall; and the Space Invaider in Goostrey.

Jenny added: “Our team look forward to wrapping their arms around this new community and welcoming them into our Cheshire Pub Co family. The new opening marks the latest chapter for this village pub, and we are proud to be taking the reins.”
