A POPULAR Chester bingo venue has announced its final farewell week for the city.

Mecca Bingo on Brookdale Place has welcomed thousands of bingo players over the years, and its prominent building signage has led many in the city to give the adjacent St Oswald's Way Roundabout the preferred name of the 'Mecca Bingo Roundabout'.

But the venue, which announced in January it was planning to close, has now revealed it is planning to host its final set of bingo games.

A poster outside the bingo hall has revealed a series of promotional days for the 'final farewell week', with its final day planned to be Sunday, February 26, where the final games will feature five jackpot prizes of £1,000.

The poster adds: "Join us and say farewell to your favourite staff."

Mecca Bingo owner Rank Group previously blamed the World Cup and colder weather for keeping customers away from its venues, which include bingo halls and casinos, as it told investors that profits were to drop by more than half over the current financial year. The company said the slump had been particularly driven by its Grosvenor Casinos business.

Rank chief executive John O'Reilly said at the time: "Weak consumer confidence and pressure on disposable income is resulting in a tougher-than-expected trading environment for our UK venues businesses, particularly in Grosvenor where we are seeing customers spending less per visit.

"Whilst we expect these challenges to continue to impact our recovery into the second half of the financial year, we have implemented a series of measures to deliver incremental cost savings and to drive revenues.

"We remain committed to our roadmap of investing in initiatives that will ensure the long-term recovery and prosperity of the group."
