AN 84-year-old man was rescued after his car plummeted into the Bridgewater Canal.

The terrifying incident happened last night, Thursday, in Lymm at around 4.40pm.

Officers were called to The Cross following reports of a Honda plunging into the canal.

The driver, who was submerged in water up to knee level in the vehicle, was rescued from the canal.

The vehicle was recovered from the canal and officers taped the area.

The fire service and a rescue boat were also at the scene.

Witnesses said the elderly driver was shaken but safe in the horrifying incident as temperatures fell well below 0c.

Neighbours from the nearby flats cared for him while the car was recovered.
