GARY Lineker poked fun at Airbus UK Broughton FC who didn't sign a now World Cup goalscorer after a trial period.

During BBC's coverage of this afternoon's World Cup match between Qatar and Senegal, Lineker made reference to Senegalese goalscorer Boulaye Dia's spell on trial at The Wingmen.

The 26-year-old striker, who is currently on loan at Italian Serie A club Salernitana from Spanish top tier club Villarreal, opened the scoring in his country's 3-1 win over the host nation on Friday.

And during the half time interval, Gary Lineker poked fun at Airbus FC for failing to secure the services of Dia.

He said: "It's quite interesting, Boulaye Dia who scored that goal had a trial, would you believe, at Airbus, yes, Airbus in the Welsh League in 2016 - and they didn't take him on."

"He was on the next flight home," Lineker joked.

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, added: "Their recruitment team will be getting the sack, won't they?"

In an interview with Get French Football News a couple of years ago, Dia confirmed he had spent time on trial with Airbus UK Broughton FC, after following a friend there.

It is believed that Dia’s friend was Kevin Monteiro, who joined the Wingmakers in January 2016 for a brief stint, before moving into the English game.

“Yes, a friend of mine whom I played with in Oyonnax when we were younger had gone to play in a top division club in Wales, in the Welsh league,” said the Senegalese international.

“The following season, through his agent, he contacted a few players to ask them to come over for trials. So I went with some team-mates.

“And it went well but I wasn’t prepared to go there. The agent said a few clubs were interested but it was all a bit ambiguous so I decided to go back to France.“

After a permanent move to The Airfield failed to materialise, Dia returned to France where he was plucked from the fourth division of French football by top flight side Stade de Reims - and the rest is history.
