A PRODUCTION company in Neston is celebrating their 70th anniversary by performing an adaptation of The Railway Children.

The Neston Players were originally based in the historic market town of Neston.

The society was originally called 'Neston Presbyterian Players', when it was formed in 1952 and plays were performed at Neston Institute.

From the mid-seventies, the name was shortened and Neston Civic Hall became the Players' home venue.

The society is proud of its rich heritage and accomplishments and continually strives for higher standards of production.

Celebrating their 70th anniversary in 2022, Neston Players will be performing the globally successful and Olivier Award-winning adaptation of The Railway Children.

The production will be Mike Kenny's version of E Nesbit’s much-loved children’s classic.

The story is about a prosperous Edwardian family of a mother and three children who are forced into near-penury in the rural north of England.

It captures the anxieties and exhilarations of childhood with great tenderness and insight.

Mike Kenny said: "You don't need a real train to perform this play.

"The most powerful prop is the imagination of the audience and the most effective tool is the skill of the actors".

As it is also the 70th anniversary for Jenny Agutter who played Bobby in the original film of The Railway Children, Neston Players wrote to her to tell her about their production.

To their delight, the group received a response from Jenny.

Chester and District Standard:

Some of the cast had great fun made a trailer to help promote the production.

The trailer was filmed at Hadlow Station in Willaston.

Neston Players are now well underway with their rehearsals for the production.

Director of the production, Ruth Stenhouse, said: "We can’t wait to welcome audiences to this lovely production of The Railway Children.

"Our actors and tech teams will tell this classic tale and we need our audiences to bring their imaginations along for the ride."

The show will run at Neston Civic Hall from Wednesday, November 16 to Saturday, November 19 at 7pm.
