CHILDREN in one Chester school have been learning about practices for good mental health this week, with the help of a national charity.

Students at The Firs School on Newton Lane enjoyed celebrating HelloYellow day, a special event organised by Young Minds UK to raise awareness of mental health in young people.

Children talked about how to look after their mental well-being and to manage day to day life by making time for the things they enjoy. They shared ideas with one another by visiting different classrooms and also enjoyed delicious 'happy' cupcakes together.

According to the latest NHS figures, nearly half a million young people are being referred for mental health problems every month, with many not being able to get the support they need.

The event coincides with World Mental Health day which took place at the beginning of this week (Monday, October 10).

Headteacher, Rosemary Evans-Moore commented: "At the Firs School we pride ourselves on our ethos that happy, self-confident children learn and develop their social and emotional wellbeing.

"Our continued aim is to cultivate a happy, healthy learning environment and our pastoral care ensures the children engage more effectively in learning and participation in school life."
