PEOPLE from up and down the country gathered to see two-time best selling author and co-writer of the hit TV show Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones this week.

On Monday, October 3, Ruth Jones visited The Neston Club for an event hosted by Sue Porter at Linghams Books.

The room was packed full of people waiting to hear all about her third novel Love Untold, secrets about her two earlier releases, Never Greener and Us three, screenplays and of course, Gavin and Stacey.

Questioned by Sue about her first novel Never Greener, which sold more than 250,000 copies, Ruth said: "It had such a good response. I was nervous because it was my first novel and I was worried that people would be expecting it to be about a woman who lived on Barry Island and had a tattoo.

"My friends thought it was going to be a funny book but essentially, it’s quite a heart-breaking story.

"For those of you who haven’t read Never Greener, it is about an affair. It was quite a passionate story with a lot of sex.

“When I came to record the audiobook, I just simply couldn’t do it!”

With non-stop laughs throughout from the audience, Ruth went on to talk about her new novel and read a sexual excerpt from it which entertained the crowd.

Ruth added: "Love Untold is different. It's a family drama about four generations of Welsh women in the same family.

“It’s an exploration into mother and daughter relationships. I think I’m right in saying it’s quite funny and one of the characters Suzie is a little bit inspired by Nessa.

“Grace as a character is inspired by my mum. She has always given me that ‘get on with it’ attitude and she has always instilled in me not to worry about the future.”

Talk then turned to Wales and Ruth’s appearance on Who Do you Think you Are? in October 2020.

She said: “I absolutely loved it. I had no idea what was coming my way.

“They told me they wanted to meet me at my mum’s house, and I said, ‘do I need my passport?’ and they responded ‘no’.

“I really wanted some exotic history in my family, but we ended up going to New Quay which is the town inspired in the book.”

Asked about what’s next, Ruth made no mention about any more Gavin and Stacey, but did mention she is bringing out a fourth novel, which she has a ‘tiny inkling’ about.

She added: “Books are a perfect form of escapism, with all of the horrible things going on in the world at the moment.”

Kelvin and Jem Moore travelled all the way from Durham to see the event.

Jem said: “20 weeks ago Kelvin had a stroke. We went away to Spain, and I saw Ruth’s book on the side, so I read it.

“When I found her book, it saved my life and saved my mental health.

“She is so warm and so lovely; she deserves to be doing events like this in arenas.”

Speaking to the Globe, Sue Porter said: “It’s great to be able to go back to in-person events. It was great fun, and we had a full house, which sold out very quickly.

“The book is amazing, and it was an absolute pleasure to have Ruth Jones again, after having her in 2018.”
