FAMILIES in Ellesmere Port have received a helping hand from a local supermarket and a community centre in the fight against holiday hunger.

Morrisons Ellesmere Port announced yesterday (Monday, August 22) that they would be continuing work within their community after providing over 160 people within with the ingredients required to make two hot meals: a roast chicken dinner and roast gammon with new potatoes and salad.

The supermarket has spent two weeks working alongside one of its Community Champions, Debbie McCauley and the People's Pantry at Stanney Grange Community Centre to put together a package to help those struggling during the summer holidays.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "Supporting the local community around our area is really important to us. We know the summer holidays can be an especially difficult time for families - as household budgets are being asked to stretch even further.

"So we hope our food donations help support families visiting Stanney Grange Community Centre this summer."

Morrisons 497 stores and 25 manufacturing and logistic sites will also support school holiday activity programmes - arranged by local schools, community groups and HAF (the Holiday Activities and Food Programme). In total, Morrisons will donate £100,000 of food to local holiday clubs across the country this summer.

The retailer's 'Pick Up Pack' scheme allows customers to purchase a bag filled with a mix of food products, which are distributed to local food banks and community organisations by in-store Community Champions supporting individuals and families.
